MIRJAM POL PARTICIPATES IN BAJA WORLD CUP 2021

Rally and Dakar racer Mirjam Pol is set to compete in her first race of 2021 on a motorcycle. Despite it being early in the year and uncertainty about what lies ahead, Pol has charted an interesting and promising season as she gears up for Dakar 2022.

Last year, rally driver Pol was introduced to the concept of baja for the first time. This sparked her interest in exploring an alternative preparation:

“I’ve decided that this year I want to participate in more short, major international events. Normally, I focus on one or two rallies a year, but now I've set my sights on competing in the World Cup Baja 2021.”

Stepping Out of Her Comfort Zone

“A baja consists of two or three competition days, while a rally has a minimum of five competition days. I’m really more of a 'diesel engine' and usually only get into my rhythm after a few days. Baja races aren't really my usual style, but I think it will be good for me to step out of my comfort zone and can be a valuable learning experience,” Pol explains her decision.

The first World Cup Baja on the FIM's calendar this year takes place in Dubai, kicking off on Friday, February 19. Pol's budget for the upcoming Dakar is still far from complete. However, thanks to several loyal sponsors who have continued to support her—even though she was unable to compete in Dakar 2021—she is at least able to begin her season in Dubai.

“I’m really looking forward to it! I'm back in the desert and can finally start riding again and building my competitive rhythm. For this baja, I’ve rented a motorcycle. I've already had the chance to test it out, and it felt great. It’s very different from riding a rally bike, and that’s how it should be. The pace in a baja is faster. From the very first second, I need to be 100% focused and give it my all. I don’t have to conserve energy like I would in a rally,” Pol shared from Dubai.

The Dubai International Baja 2021 will take place on February 19 and 20, 2021.
